The Male Image:  Representations of Masculinity in Postwar Poetry

(Basingstoke: Palgrave,  2001)

Title

The Male Image: Representations of Masculinity in Postwar Poetry read postwar poets in the context of a range of gender theories and showed the extent to which male poets such as Robert Lowell, Ted Hughes, Seamus Heaney and Derek Walcott each evolved their own version of an identifiably masculine poetic.

This book is an interesting and informative approach to masculine attiudes in contemporary poetry. It is amusing and enlightening to read (something nearly unheard of in academic literature). The author obviously views the study of such poetry in a lighthearted yet intellingent way, and has the confidence to express himself humourously without detracting from the main focus.

A book which should be read by scholars and students alike - you will find the depth of research and commentary most impressive!

Another fascinating read from this highly educated author. I look forward to reading any forthcoming titles.
